When first landing on Icarus, prospectors have no possessions but their Envirosuit. As they start gathering Stones, Sticks and Flora with their bare hands, they can Craft Stone Pickaxes to mine Minerals and Stone Axes to collect Wood. Gaining experience will earn blueprint points they can use to unlock more items to craft in the Planetary Tech Tree. Completing Prospects will earn credits they can use to unlock technologies in the Workshop Tech Tree aboard the Space Station.
The choices prospectors make in unlocking technologies results in customized experiences while increasing their chances of staying alive longer. If they do well, prospectors will thrive on the planet long enough to mine the Exotic ores that are in such demand!
Planetary Tech Tree[]
At the moment there are four tiers to unlock:
Tier 1[]
Tier 1 provides the foundational tools to Survive as a prospector. They are Crafted without the need for an external bench. Prospectors can unlock basic Tools and Weapons, like the Stone Axe and Wood Bow, and survival items like the Campfire.
Tier 2[]
Once prospectors hit level 10, they are granted access to Tier 2, and unlock the Crafting Bench. Tier 2 is a little more technical, pushing prospectors to be more strategic when gathering resources and deciding how to utilize them. Enhanced Hunting and Building come into play with new benches like Stone Furnace, Skinning Bench, Masonry Bench, Carpentry Bench, Herbalism Bench and Textiles Bench.
Tier 3[]
After prospectors reach level 20, they unlock Tier 3 and the Machining Bench. As the name suggests, the machining bench enables a significant jump in technology, using advanced materials like the Platinum Ingot to craft a whole range of new Deployables, like the Glassworking Bench and Biofuel Composter. Tier 3 also contains blueprints for Firearms, which offer a substantial increase in lethality to prospectors.
Tier 4[]
Tier 4 is where prospectors will find the tools and equipment to withstand the extremes of Icarus. From Composite Armor to the Compound Bow and the Titanium Knife, nothing but the best awaits prospectors that reach level 30. The Fabricator also leads toward true manufacturing, electricity generation and hydroponics.

While prospectors use their experience earned on Icarus to learn new technologies on the surface of Icarus, they can also research a wide range of items that can be purchased in the Space Station's Workshop. While many of those items mimic what can be made by prospectors on the surface (like Pickaxes and Bows), many are unique to the workshop. These include Modules and Envirosuits.
