Overview[]
Below is a list of weapons that a Prospector can use in self-defense against, and employ while hunting, the Wildlife of Icarus.
Subcategories[]
There are several different weapon groups a Prospector can unlock while progressing through the four tiers of the Tech Tree. Which one a Prospector decides to use will depend on strategic awareness and personal preference.
Knives |
---|
Knives are fast close quarter melee weapons. Knives themselves cannot be thrown, but the Throwing Knife variant can. |
Throwing Knives |
---|
Throwing Knives are a ranged variant of knives, granting Prospectors an alternative method of dealing ranged damage to targets. |
Spears |
---|
Spears are an alternative to knives providing increased reach when hitting targets and increased damage at the cost of attack speed. |
Javelins |
---|
Prospectors may find the various javelins to be the most versatile weapons on Icarus. Unlike spears, javelins can be thrown with devastating results. This ranged capability allows for flexibility in wildlife encounters. Javelins, however, cannot be used as melee weapons and have a considerable charge time. |
Bows |
---|
An ancient technology, Bows are a class of ranged Weapons that allow Prospectors to engage Fauna from a distance; when coupled with Stealth, they enable Prospectors to be very effective Hunters. |

Damage Calculation[]
One can get some variance, but weapon damage seems to be calculated as follows:
Damage = Base Weapon Damage * Damage Multiplier * Stealth Multiplier * Critical Multiplier
Kill Camera Shots
Damage = Max. Base Damage * Weapon multiplier * Stealth multiplier * (Crit. multiplier + 20)
Although the damage shown as being done by a Kill Camera shot is much greater than a regular shot, in order to trigger it you need to do enough damage to kill the target and this is determined based on a "normal" shot's damage. For example; you can Kill Camera a level 21 bear with a Recurve Bow firing an Aluminium Arrow and it will show the damage done as 7275 but what actually triggered the Kill Camera was the "normal" stealth & crit damage which does a maximum of 1275 and is also greater than the bear's health (a level 21 bear has between 900-1160 health, more testing is required). You can also see this occuring when using a Longbow with Bone Arrow. That combination deals a maximum of 769 damage with a stealth crit which is not enough to Kill Camera a bear on the first shot but if you deal some damage to the bear and then move away and return to stealth a second shot can trigger a Kill Camera which shows 4520 damage being done.
Although this effectively limits Kill Camera shots to dealing no more damage than a regular shot they are still superior to regular fire. When the prospector takes into account that most arrows and bolts are unable to break on a Kill Camera shot, it becomes possible to keep firing and retrieving the same couple of arrows, again and again. Assuming the prospector is getting Kill Camera shots, this makes higher end arrows a more efficient option for hunting bigger targets. Prospectors should aim and crouch to achieve stealth in order to maximize the chances of getting a Kill Camera shot.
Knowing the approximate health of targets can allow prospectors to make better decisions on what ammunition to use. A crit from a Longbow firing a Bone Arrow does at least 277 damage, enough to drop a snow wolf in one shot when it is charging. A Stone Arrow in the same circumstance will take two shots, and if multiple wolves are moving in the prospector's defense will likely require switching to a knife or other melee weapon. In the same circumstance, selecting better than a Bone Arrow is inefficient, as the prospector does risk breaking the arrow on a regular crit shot, while the outcome remains the same: a dead wolf with a single shot.
There is also the concept of a partial stealth shot that has a 1.5x multiplier, but the window for getting one of these is extremely small: the animal has fully noticed the prospector (full yellow diamond) but has not yet gone on the attack.
Some talents increase the amount of crit damage weapons do. These talents typically add 8-14 percent (0.08-0.14) to the crit multiplier. When compared to the amount you get for scoring a crit this increase is essentially meaningless and therefore prospectors may want to avoid investing in these talents.
For example, a stealth crit from a Longbow with a Bone Arrow does a maximum of 769 damage. If one includes all the possible crit increases from a full bow talent selection, that figure increases to 795 damage, or 26 more damage; those four talent points could probably be better spent elsewhere.
