Overview[]
Fishing provides an alternative method to obtain food while exploring that is not focused on combat. With enough challenge to keep prospectors engaged and the serenity of a peaceful evening by the lakeside, time flies by as prospectors cast their line.
There are 67 species of fish to catch on Icarus, which can be found in any body of water. From lakes and rivers to babbling brooks and raging waterfalls, the world is your oyster. Each catch will unlock more information in the fishing book (press 'J'), giving you tips and tricks to employ on your next expedition. Fish caught using a Fishing Rod specifically will progress the Master Angler achievement.
Fishing Equipment[]
Below is a list of fishing equipment currently available to prospectors that can be crafted at the Basic Fishing Bench.
Basic Fishing Bench[]
The Basic Fishing Bench is your hub for all things fishing. The left side of the bench is your workspace for crafting rods, lures, and traps. The right side is for filleting your catches into saltwater or freshwater fillets to be used in a range of new recipes to prepare for you and your fellow prospectors.
Fishing Rods[]
There are three different fishing rods to use, from the Basic Fishing Rod to more advanced versions. The better the quality of your rod, the easier it is to catch the rarer species.
Lures[]
There are 21 lures available to prospectors that can be attached to a fishing rod or fishing trap. Each lure is unique, with its own design and advantages for catching different fish species. Experimenting with different lures, fishing spots, and rods gives you the best chance of catching all 67 species.
Fishing Traps[]
The Basic Fishing Trap/ Advanced Fishing Trap can be deployed in any body of water and will catch fish native to that area of the map. These can fill up with Fish Chunks/ Spoiled Plants as the water current flows through them, so they require a little maintenance to keep them effective.
Tackle Box[]
Prospectors can craft a tackle box that functions as a portable storage container, which is suitable for keeping your fish fresh when you're away from your base. It can also store your lures, keeping them organized in one place.
Displaying Fish[]
Prospectors have the option to display their eye-catching fish on Fish Trophy Mounts or in various aquariums. The fish trophy mount prevents your finned friends from spoiling but can only hold one fish at a time. The tier 4 aquariums have more slots to store more fish but require power and water to ensure your stored fish stay fresh and alive, but that can easily be mitigated by adding Power Storage/Water Storage to each resource network to ensure your aquariums stay active during the night.
Fishing Mechanics[]
There are 67 different species of fish, each with varying weights and lengths. They come in four different rarities and have unique quality rankings. Additionally, fish can be found in either saltwater or freshwater. Freshwater fish are found in the Forest and Arctic biomes, while deserts, swamps, and volcanic biomes are home to saltwater varieties.
The quality ranking of the fish determines how much resource it provides you, and how difficult reeling it in will be. The closer to a 100% quality ranking, the larger and heavier the fish will be. Heavier fish will provide more fillets or chunks if filleted, and be far more visually impressive when mounted on your wall or placed in your aquarium.
Fishing Minigame[]
To cast the line, hold left click and release. Once cast, a bobber with an indicator can be seen floating atop the water. Once the indicator turns yellow, left-click to start the fishing mini-game before the caught fish escapes.
Above the mini-game is a progress bar, indicating your progress towards catching the fish attached to your pole. Below it is an indicator of the fish you are trying to catch and the capture zone (indicated by a light-colored box). During the mini-game, the fish will try to break free and will sporadically move left or right. The goal is to keep the fish in the capture zone to fill the progress bar at the top of the mini-game. While in the mini-game, hold left-click to move the capture zone to the right, and release to move the capture area to the left. While the fish is in the capture zone, the progress bar will fill. But, while it is out of the zone, the progress bar will deplete. Once the progress bar is completely filled, the fish is caught. If the progress bar fully depletes, however, the fish will escape. A photo of the fishing mini-game can be found in the Gallery below.
